The Food Standards Agency (FSA) has announced that planning for the formal merger of the FSA and its executive agency, the Meat Hygiene Service (MHS), will start soon, with the operational work of the MHS forming the core of a new FSA Operations Group.

Organic review published

An independent review commissioned by the Food Standards Agency (FSA) shows that there are no important differences in the nutrition content, or any additional health benefits, of organic food when compared with conventionally produced food. The focus of the review was the nutritional content of foodstuffs.

Agency launches consultation on reducing saturated fat and added sugar in key foods

The Agency is today launching a consultation on its proposals to introduce voluntary recommendations for food manufacturers for reductions in saturated fat and added sugar and increased availability of smaller single-portion sizes in a number of key foods ? biscuits, cakes, pastries, buns, chocolate confectionery and soft drinks.

New members sought for expert novel foods committee

A new Chair and an expert molecular biologist are needed for the Advisory Committee on Novel Foods and Processes (ACNFP). The Food Standards Agency intends to appoint in November 2009. The ACNFP is an independent body of experts that advises the FSA on any matters relating to novel foods and novel food processes.

99p Stores withdraws some Elgorriaga Chocolate

99p Stores has withdrawn some Elgorriaga Chocolate con Leche, because the product contains peanuts and almonds, which are not mentioned on the product label. This makes the product a possible health risk for anyone with an allergy to nuts. The Agency has issued an Allergy Alert.

The Food Standards Agency has today published the agenda and papers for the 30 July meeting of the UK-wide Scores on the Doors Working Group considering the scope of the scheme and ’start-up’ issues for local authorities.

Heinz recalls spaghetti bolognese baby food

Heinz is recalling a batch of Heinz Mum?s Own Spaghetti Bolognese baby food due to the possibility of small pieces of plastic being in it, which could be a choking hazard. The Agency has issued a Food Alert for Information.

Morrisons withdraws some Frozen Sweet and Sour Battered Chicken

Morrisons has withdrawn some of its own-brand Sweet and Sour Battered Chicken, because there is a problem with the packaging on one batch of Chicken Chow Mein. This means that one date code of the Sweet and Sour Battered Chicken contains the Chicken Chow Mein, which contains sesame and soya, which are not mentioned on the product label.
